What Students and Pilots Say
★☆☆☆☆ 1 month agoThank you for your response. I understand ATP’s current position that instructor employment is not guaranteed. However, that is not what I was told before I enrolled. A year ago, Admissions told me that if I completed the program and did not have more than two checkride failures, I would have the opportunity to be hired as an instructor. That representation played a major role in my decision to invest over $100,000 …

★☆☆☆☆ 3 weeks agoPlease do not attend this school. I genuinely encourage anyone considering ATP to think very carefully before investing their time, money, and future here. If you’re trying to decide where to complete your flight training, I strongly recommend looking at other options first. Before I started training, I spoke with Admissions worker that no longer works there. I was told that if I completed the program and did not ha…

★☆☆☆☆ 3 months agoATP has its purpose. Statistically 8 out of 10 student pilots don’t complete their pilot rating. The ATP program structure helps overcome this. I saw the greatest value in private pilot, to see what activities I should be doing on a day to day basis. Once that is observed and learned, it can be replicated. ATP has different variations of programs. People who started a few weeks ahead of me got MEI, I got part 61 comm…

★☆☆☆☆ 3 years agoI'm going to start from the top and justify the reasoning behind my one star rating. To begin, this program will leave you in crippling debt. Expect to come out of the program with at least 80-100k down. The instructors are usually students from the same program that you are currently enrolled in, so expect a large level of uncertainty from the person teaching you how to fly. The sad part about all of it is that most…

Planning Your Training Here
Planning training at a local school like ATP Flight School trades the academy's speed for flexibility and often meaningfully lower total cost. The pay-as-you-fly model keeps your money in your control, and training two to three lessons weekly around work is the proven rhythm, enough frequency to retain skills without the academy's all-in schedule. The variable to manage is momentum: local-school students who succeed book standing lesson slots, fly year-round, and treat ground study as homework rather than something that happens at the airport. Ask about aircraft scheduling depth, instructor availability on your target days, and examiner wait times in Mesa, the three friction points that stretch part-time timelines.
What Flying in Arizona Teaches You
Arizona is the closest thing American flight training has to a weather cheat code: well over 300 flyable days a year, which is why airline academies cluster here. The trade is heat. Summer density altitude turns a routine takeoff into a performance planning exercise, and monsoon season builds afternoon storms that teach real weather respect. Phoenix-area students also inherit busy, professional airspace, with Deer Valley regularly ranking among the busiest general aviation airports anywhere.
How to Evaluate ATP Flight School on Your Tour
Every school on this directory gets the same advice from us, because the fundamentals don't move. Walk the ramp and count how many aircraft are down for maintenance. Ask how many lessons a week they can actually schedule you, and how far out the booking calendar runs. Ask for first-attempt checkride pass rates and how long students wait for an examiner. And keep your money in your control: pay as you fly, or in small blocks with clear refund terms.
Then weigh the location itself. Training in Mesa means building your early hours in Arizona weather and airspace, and both become part of your airmanship. Our school-selection guide covers the full vetting checklist, and the financing page maps scholarships and loans that apply at schools like this one.
Common Questions About Training at ATP Flight School
How long would my training take here?
Part-time students flying two to three lessons weekly typically earn a private certificate in six to twelve months and a commercial certificate in two to three years, with pace set by your calendar and the weather. Consistency decides everything: standing lesson slots beat sporadic bursts by months.
What will it cost, and can I get help paying?
Get ATP Flight School's current rates directly; published numbers age fast in this industry. Nationally, plan on $80,000 to $120,000 from zero time to commercial certificates before instructing pay starts offsetting costs. Our financing guide maps the loans, scholarships, and airline cadet programs that apply here, and several scholarship cycles go undersubscribed every single year.
How should I arrange a visit?
Call ahead and ask for a tour on a normal training day, not a quiet one. Use the directions button above to plan the drive to Mesa, arrive early enough to watch ramp operations, and bring the vetting checklist from this page. A school proud of its operation will show you everything; hesitation is itself an answer.
