What Students and Pilots Say

Rainier is where flight dreams go to die. I flew with RFS at multiple locations for two+ years (after coming from a different, highly structured flight school where I had no trouble whatsoever achieving multiple ratings). My experience at Rainier was a total train wreck from beginning-to-end. I'm leaving out key details because I don't want to identify myself. But I want to let the record reflect that what happened t…

They say it's hard to teach an old dog new tricks. RFS has proven this to be incorrect. I started at another flight school in the area but switched due to scheduling conflicts. The other school was good but I have to say Rainier is a definitely level up. The instruction I got was incredible and focused on helping me achieve my goal. I had to balance a heavy work schedule with lots of work travel during my training bu…

Just obtained my PPL today and want to start by saying I wouldnt want to do my training anywhere else. All around great environment for learning and growth. All staff are very professional and care alot about the students here. The MTX team does a great job in keeping the aircraft in great condition for training. Every instructor Ive met always seemed willing to help and wanted to see me succeed. My primary flight in…

Did my PPL at Rainier in Renton, really enjoyed it. The key drivers for me were maintenance and fleet quality/ newness and both of these are really good. Pricing of planes and instructors are transparent and good for the area, albeit I think some of the older planes could probably do with a $10 an hour discount vs the 2023 ones. Had 2 instructors during my time and both were great, both left for the airlines. Advice …

Planning Your Training Here

Planning training at a local school like Rainier Flight Service trades the academy's speed for flexibility and often meaningfully lower total cost. The pay-as-you-fly model keeps your money in your control, and training two to three lessons weekly around work is the proven rhythm, enough frequency to retain skills without the academy's all-in schedule. The variable to manage is momentum: local-school students who succeed book standing lesson slots, fly year-round, and treat ground study as homework rather than something that happens at the airport. Ask about aircraft scheduling depth, instructor availability on your target days, and examiner wait times in Seattle, the three friction points that stretch part-time timelines.

What Flying in Washington Teaches You

Washington offers big-league airspace training: Boeing Field and Renton sit inside Seattle's layered Class B structure, so students fly professional procedures from the start, sharing frequencies with airline and factory traffic. Marine weather adds stratus timing and real instrument opportunities.

How to Evaluate Rainier Flight Service on Your Tour

Every school on this directory gets the same advice from us, because the fundamentals don't move. Walk the ramp and count how many aircraft are down for maintenance. Ask how many lessons a week they can actually schedule you, and how far out the booking calendar runs. Ask for first-attempt checkride pass rates and how long students wait for an examiner. And keep your money in your control: pay as you fly, or in small blocks with clear refund terms.

Then weigh the location itself. Training in Seattle means building your early hours in Washington weather and airspace, and both become part of your airmanship. Our school-selection guide covers the full vetting checklist, and the financing page maps scholarships and loans that apply at schools like this one.

Common Questions About Training at Rainier Flight Service

How long would my training take here?

Part-time students flying two to three lessons weekly typically earn a private certificate in six to twelve months and a commercial certificate in two to three years, with pace set by your calendar and the weather. Consistency decides everything: standing lesson slots beat sporadic bursts by months.

What will it cost, and can I get help paying?

Get Rainier Flight Service's current rates directly; published numbers age fast in this industry. Nationally, plan on $80,000 to $120,000 from zero time to commercial certificates before instructing pay starts offsetting costs. Our financing guide maps the loans, scholarships, and airline cadet programs that apply here, and several scholarship cycles go undersubscribed every single year.

How should I arrange a visit?

Call ahead and ask for a tour on a normal training day, not a quiet one. Use the directions button above to plan the drive to Seattle, arrive early enough to watch ramp operations, and bring the vetting checklist from this page. A school proud of its operation will show you everything; hesitation is itself an answer.
