Type Narrowbody Airliner

Boeing 737

No pilot certificate travels further than a 737 type rating. Boeing has delivered more than 11,000 of them across six decades, Southwest built the largest domestic airline on nothing else, and United, American, Alaska, and Delta fly the type by the hundreds. Somewhere over America right now, several hundred 737s are working.

The airplane's cockpit culture is famously hands-on. The 737 kept conventional control columns and a systems philosophy pilots describe as mechanical honesty; the MAX generation added big displays and LEAP engines while keeping the same type rating lineage, which is precisely why airlines love the family economics.

The Seat It Represents

For most US pilots the 737 is the major-airline arrival point: the seat where regional or military experience converts into a career-defining seniority number. First officers at the majors flying 737s see layered schedules, international spurs into Mexico and the Caribbean, and a pay scale that doubles regional captain money.

The type also owns a second life in freight: converted 737 freighters fly overnight packages for operators feeding the integrators, one more door the rating opens.

Student Questions, Answered

How many hours before a 737 seat is realistic?

Majors typically hire pilots holding a few thousand total hours with solid turbine time from the regionals, cargo, or the military. The retirement wave has pulled those averages down, but nobody steps from a trainer into this cockpit.

Does a 737 type rating transfer between airlines?

The rating is yours for life, though airlines retrain new hires to their own procedures regardless. Its real value is what it represents on a resume: you've operated a transport jet to ATP standards in revenue service.

MAX or NG: does the variant matter to my career?

Not for planning purposes. One type rating family covers the modern 737s, airlines run mixed fleets, and crews fly both in the same month. Fleet assignment is a bid, not a career decision.

Where It Fits On Your Path

Type ratings here come with a major-airline class date. Everything on this site, the certificates, the 1,500 hours, the regional years, funnels toward a seat like this one.
